UAE Announces AED 170 Billion National Road Network

Undoubtedly, Dubai’s population has soared since the 2020 global pandemic, housing 1 million new residents in the last 5 years. The nation has become the primary address for global citizens, entrepreneurs, and investors alike, including over 81,000 high net-worth individuals. Due to this unprecedented growth, the UAE has been experiencing increased traffic congestion in multiple regions, including Etihad Road and parts of Sharjah.

To officially kick off 2026, the UAE Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure has announced a whopping AED 170 billion project to improve the country’s road networks; the plan aims to have all goals implemented by 2030. Furthermore, Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy & Infrastructure, has stated that this initiative will enhance road efficiency by 73% over the next 5 years.
The initiative to improve national road networks details its comprehensive goals:

  • Etihad Road (E11) will integrate 6 new lanes, with 3 on each side. This aims to boost the highway’s capacity by 60% and equips the road with 12 total lanes.

  • Emirates Road (E611) will expand to 10 lanes across its entire length, allowing the highway capacity to increase by 65% and reduce travel times by 45%.

  • ·Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed Road (E311) will also be widened by 10 lanes, enhancing its capacity by 45%.
Furthermore, the ambitions of this initiative don’t end with expansions. The Ministry of Energy & Infrastructure is currently conducting a feasibility study to introduce a 4th national highway that will house 12 lanes at a length of 120 kms. The highway will reportedly accommodate 360,000 trips a day, further easing inter-emirate commutes.

Furthermore, the initiative has reserved AED 750 million of the allocated budget for Emirates Road (E611) upgrades to ensure its timely completion within 2 years.

To combat ongoing congestion and commute bottlenecks, the UAE has established a 24-hour traffic monitoring center to analyze traffic causes and propose data-driven intelligent solutions to improve the overall flow of commute across the nation.

The UAE’s first ever railway system, The Etihad Rail, is scheduled to begin operating in 2026, further alleviating inter-emirate congestions for the time being while the national road network initiative is implemented.
